The Xmas Fest- and Bockbiere available now are legion. You could do worse than to stop at two shops not far from the A73 in Erlangen: Kitzmann Bräukontor http://www.kitzmann.de/index.php?id=21 and Meschede Getränkemarkt, Gebbertstr. 70 Between these two, you'll find quite a few Festbiere and Böcke, as well as the only place I know of selling Griess Bock in bottles (though I may have bought up the stock by the time you're driving through). Please don't stop and drink at the Kitzmann Gaststätte though, since Erlangen is a huge bike town, and my better half and I will likely be out and about on ours around town this weekend. (Not to mention Kitzmann sucks pretty badly!) Bikes have right-of-way here, basically, and if you hit one --even if the bike's going the wrong way down a one way street-- you will be found at fault. And if you're in any kind of accident, commit any kind of traffic infraction, or are even stopped at random by the police, you may be (or will be in the case of hte former) subject to a DUI test. The blood alcohol limit if you're in an accident (either your fault or someone else's) is 0.25 (0.025 US reckoning), instead of the normal 0.5 (0.05 US). Please also bear in mind that you have to allow 1 - 1.5 meters' clearance when you pass a bike on country or city roads. This means, when you approach a bike from behind, and a car is coming in the opposite direction, you must wait for the other car to go by before you can pass the bike. Common sense maybe, but not always a habit of North American car drivers...assuming you're from North America and don't already have a German Führerschein. With all that in mind...Abseits has Mönschsambacher Bock on tap now, not Griess. Hope it's still on when you arrive, as it's outstanding. The other beers in the bottle (aus der Flasche) are also worth trying, but pace yourself! His beer menü: http://www.abseits.de/bierkarte.pdf I personally like Mahr's and Keesmann's Böcke quite a bit this year, but not Spezial's (too dark and muddled), nor Greifenklau's (too mild). Enjoy Bamberg! Personally, I wouldn't even bother with trying to get to the countryside Gaststätten now; there's enough in town to drink. (And then you could leave the car safely parked.) If you're actually not driving, but are coming by train, then we could arrange for me to leave you some bottles in a locker at the Erlangen Bahnhof.
