No Trains next August: Bamberg - Forchheim

They're extending a Nürnberger S-Bahn line out to Forchheim, and then all the way to Bamberg. Now, there are Regional Express (RE) and Regional Bahn (RB) trains every hour between Bamberg and Nberg. When everything's finished, S-Bahn trains will run every 20 or 40 minutes between Nberg and Forchheim, and hourly between Forchheim and Bamberg. The good thing about this (besides increased service frequency between Forchheim and Nürnberg) is that the old, difficult-to-board-with-bikes RBs will be replaced with lower-riding S-Bahn trains. The worst thing, however, is that the stations at Buttenheim and Strullendorf will apparently be rebuilt, and trains simply won't stop at them next summer between 01.08.09 and 14.09.09 (or 8/1/08 - 9/14/08 if that better suits your dating nomenclature). Buses will serve the stops between Bamberg and Forchheim in the interim, but I don't know if bikes will be allowed on board. The guy running the Löwenbräu Gaststätte next to the Buttenheimer Bahnhof told me once that the station house there is the oldest existing station house in the country. Sad to see it'll be rennovated or rebuilt. The S-Bahn service to Forchheim may go into effect as early as December 2010, and to Bamberg as early as December 2011. Good luck finding definitive details "im Internet"; I'm basing this post on an article in the free "Franken Report" paper.
