Gambrinus Unterrhaid / Wagner Oberhaid

This is a contract pub. Last year I assumed it was done by Maisel Bamberg as all the other beers came from Maisel. Stopped in today on the way to Stettfeld and this time all the other beers were from Göller (Zeil) so I assume that is where they now have the beer brewed. Last year it was very enjoyable, this year not so much. I also hear that many of the Maisel pubs are switching to Kaiserdom or Fässla -- the latter being a good thing, I think. On the ride back we stopped in at Wagner Oberhaid. It was their Kirchweih so they had a festbier. The first half of a swallow was really good, but then it tasted like one of those hard butterscotch candies I used to buy as a kid. It was so butterscotch that I wanted to order some vanilla ice cream. I managed to visit (by bicycle) all three Wagner breweries in the area. Wagner Kemmern beat out Wagner Merkendorf by a nose, but both were many lengths ahead of Wagner Oberhaid. Also, in the 30 mile ride we did today around Bamberg, I think I drank more good beer than the 340km loop my dad I did along the Fünf Flüsse Radweg (mostly Oberpfalz, with a little Oberbayern and even a little Niederbayern thrown in). If it weren't for Schneider Weisse in Kelheim, Kneitinger in Regensburg and Berghammer in Oberndorf (in between) it wouldn't even be close. Not that the beers were bad, they were just (with those exceptions) for the most part very ordinary. The dunkel at the Altstadthotel Brauerei in Berching was very interesting in that it had a huge amount of chocolate malt (with an ale yeast it would make a nice brown porter).
