Hopfenernte 2008: Gut!

Hopharvest 2008 should be good, according to an article in last week's Erlangen paper, which I'm only getting around to posting about now due to sloth. Basically, the wet spring and dry May-June did minimal damage this year, and the aphids were kept in check with ...er... pesticides. (Obviously not in the bio/organic hopfields though!) The quality and quantity of this year's crop should be higher than last year's. It also goes on a bit about how the increased demand from Russia and China in the last few years has led to an orientation from "Freihopfen" to "Vertragshopfen" (contract hops); apparently more farmers are contracted to specific customers, which in turn secures the farmers' finanzial situation. I can't find the article online, but there are a couple of other articles here: http://www.pegnitz-zeitung.de/artikel.asp?art=871078&kat=21&man=12 along the same lines, talking about the good year and how hop acerage is slowly growing, and http://www.schwabacher-tagblatt.de/artikel.asp?art=875127&kat=24&man=12 about the tradional hop-pluckers' festival in Spalt next weekend including the election of the Spalter Hopfenqueen and Bierqueen, about which one can find Fotos here: http://www.spalt.de/data/touristNews.php?id=97202 and then http://www.spalt.de/data/touristNews.php?id=97201 about today's Hopfengartenfest taking place in the hop booster's club's display garden. May have to head down there today!
