Ron Pattinson's guide (http://www.europeanbeerguide.net/vienpubs.htm) will get you started, but there are a couple of places worth visiting not mentioned there. The new Eipeltauer brewpub (Heiligenstädterlände 11, 1190 Wien, http://www.eipeltauerbier.at/) is a bit of a challenge to get to, just because the location is rather non-obvious - although surprisingly easy to find by car if you know which industrial park it's in! The Känguruh Bierbeisl (Bürgerspitalgasse 20, not far from the Westbahnhof) is a good place to get your Belgian on (yes, in Vienna), and features a good range of Austrian beers on tap as well. One place Ron's website *does* mention, the 1516 Brewing Co., is a personal favorite, and Horst, the owner, while a bit shy and quiet, is a good guy, and his beer range is always interesting, to say the least. If any of the new-breed German brewpubs were this imaginative, it would be a better world indeed. |
