http://www.klosterbrauerei-weissenohe.de/geschichteframe.htm That's a nice photo. They assume brewing began with the monastery's founding in the 11th century. Through the subsequent centuries, the Kloster had been tossed back and forth between various princes and bishops, as well as destroyed and rebuilt several times. The monastic Braumeister continued to operate the brewery after the secularisation, until he sold it in 1827, to the family that still owns it today. Wiki says that the monastic buildings were torn down except for one wing in 1850, which suggests that the brewery itself can't be any older than that. The Gaststätte closed in 1943 because of "lack of supplies", but then reopened in 2000. |
