Any Annafest reports? |

| Temperatures: I don't trust bank thermometers any more. They often seem to report temp's about 3 or 4 ° too warm (Celsius, of course!). But yeah, it was *hot* last week. And muggy. The week before, though, had been oddly cold and wet--a few days around 16°. Luckily we got that weather out of the way in time for the Fest! BTW, foreigners who speak a little Deutsch can always count on bringing a group of Krauts to great fits of laughter by mixing up the words "schwül" and "schwul" when talking about how muggy the weather is. The Hoffmann Keller is a bit odd about selling beer direct at the Keller (across the road from the Gasthaus): they'll serve you there but you have to pay a server. Otherwise, I've never had any trouble with getting my own beers at the Keller(s)...but I also often don't sit at a table when I do this. The vast majority of locals seem to sit at a table for hours with table service; I wander around and often drink whilst standing(!). But I'm odd that way. "BIERfest" or not: We discussed the Annafest in a couple of my classes last week (business English, more or less), and I asked why they call it a "Bierfest". They only call it that when speaking to English speakers. Why? Because they think that we think that a Volksfest (people's fest) like the Annafest which has lots of beer is supposed to be called a "Bierfest". But to them, it's just a big Volksfest with more different beers than usual. I explained that where I'm from, a "beer fest" is a fest that's focused on trying different kinds of beer. "Ah, like a 'Weinprobe'," one said. Yeah, something like that, but with beer. I did manage to discipline myself this year: Afternoon bike ride to the Fest, try a beer, maybe a small Schnitt of a second one, and then back home with the train. Except for Friday, when Treinjan forced me to drink to excess! |
