Five Rivers Bike Trail

The Altmühltal is quite popular; the DB adds extra bike cars to trains on Sundays, but even that isn't enough--they add buses to accomodate the bikers who don't find places on the trains at stations in the area. Attractions like Weißenburg and Pappenheim, as well as the "Twelve Apostles" cliff formations, etc. http://www.altmuehltal.de/radtour/index.htm Go on a weekday to avoid the crush of families and blue-hairs. Yesterday's ride from home (Erlangen) along the canal to Eggolsheim, then up in the hills before back down to Geisfeld was fantastic, though I fear that Griess have cut back on hop useage, as recent bottles haven't been so amazingly bitter & hoppy, nor were yesterday's first Kellerbiere of the season at the Keller. (Bay'r Anstich) Good, still, and none of the diacytel plaguing the batch of bottles residing in my own Keller (expiration date 28.07.2008), but just not what it used to be. This is not a good sign. He didn't raise his price this year--still 3,60€ per Maß--so I wonder if he's cutting corners on hops. Bad Braumeister! And get this--the current special beer at Krug in Geisfeld is a "self-brewed Belgian Klosterbier". Not bad at all, but more like an amber bubble-gummy, slightly strong weizen than something Belgian. Praise be to the brewer for daring to do something different! How the regular Lager tastes & looks makes me wonder if the brewery kit isn't a modern one. Just a bit thin and husky. Took the train back home from Buttenheim. (Without stopping at either Keller, if you can believe it.)
