Beer prices rise in Biergartens & Franconia

I was indeed shocked to see the new prices at both Roppelt's Keller in Stiebarlimbach and Lieberth's in Hallerndorf a week ago Sunday: 3.50 € per Maß. That's 30 cents over last season's price. No one was complaining though. Everyone just seems to know about the increasing costs--Hallerndorf is a farming-oriented community of course. And it didn't seem to be affecting business, as this Handyfoto of the Schlange(*) for beer suggests: http://i26.tinypic.com/j5v3mu.jpg Perhaps the longest line I've ever seen there. (*We call it a "line" or a "queue"; they call it a "snake"!) It was the first weekend that those two Keller(s) were open, owing to the weather. Food prices, FWICT, seemed unaffected. My Schäuferla was good, though it gave me a bit of gas later. http://i25.tinypic.com/2lj12dw.jpg And the tree thing on the side of one of the farm houses in S'limbach is blooming: http://i27.tinypic.com/2zel3xx.jpg Final stop at Br. Witzgall on the way to the train at Eggolsheim saw--IIRC--no price increase from last year: 1,60 € per Seidla. But this was at the Brewery, as they were waiting until 1st May to open their Keller. So maybe their Kellerprices will be higher too. We'd been up to the Keller(s) at Kreuzberg earlier in April, to see Friedel's new Kellergaststätte, and I hadn't noticed the prices there or at the Rittmayer Keller. There is other Kreuzberg news to report though, but I'll wait to report on that, as I don't want to spoil Fred's surprise! (Assuming Fred makes it there on this trip.) But the prices on the Kreuzberg were always a bit higher than at Stiebarlimbach, so I wouldn't have necessarily noticed anyway. The 2007 price at Roppelt's was a 7% increase over the 2006 price (3.00 €), most of which was of course justifiable based on the increase in the value added / sales tax which had gone into effect that January. (Well, the increase in tax itself was actually about 9 cents, but I don't blame Franz for raising it the extra 11 cents--he's got a big operation to run!) But after all that, we spent a long weekend in München...Munich, coming back yesterday. So, the shock of 3,50 € liters at Stiebarlimbach and Hallerndorf was somewhat softened by having to pay nearly double as much at places like Augustiner's Keller and the Viktualienmarkt. Worse than the price "sticker schock" though, was just realizing--again--how utterly ***lame*** most of Munich's beers are in comparison to Franken's. Perhaps the worst offender is Paulaner's "Kellerbier" at their newly-rebuilt complex am Nockherberg. Nearly 7€ for a liter of what could simply be a Weizen/helles Lager mix! Almost undrinkable, it was. And I'd been curious about this beer, having heard about how great it supposedly was, and its being only available there at the Keller. Never, never, again. Then again, I've nearly fallen asleep tring to finish a liter of Augustiner's Urstoff, the most boring beer ever to see the inside of a "Holzfass". And everyone raves that one up too. Their Maibock was good though. Hofbräu's Maibock at the English Garden was good as well, FWIW. A train/bike getaway to Kloster Ettal on Sunday was absolutely lovely though, and the beer quite nice. Brought a bottle of the Doppelbock back to try, but the Pils, Hell, and Dunkel were fine vom Fass. Good Klosterkäse too.
