Wheat Beers of Unknown Origin?

As many of you are aware I spent 2 weeks in Franconia last July (the third of 3 visits within a year) and I called this tour the "No Wheat Beer Tour". Not that I've got anything against wheat beer, it's just that most of the wheat beers appear to be recent additions to the brewer's range. Since I couldn't drink everything (I've only the one liver) I chose the more traditional beers and stuck mainly to Kellerbiers and similar. Now I read the following on Ron Pattinson's blog (He's just returned from a tour with Beer-Mania with lots of info). "What else did he say that was interesting? Oh yes - 60% of his output in Weizen. I hope I'm not letting the cat out of the bag, but this includes the Weizen for Spezial of Bamberg. Spezial supplies them with their own smoked malt. Essing is quite a stretch from Bamberg, so I wonder why they would be having their Weizen brewed here. Simple explanation: he and the brewer at Spezial shared a room while at brewing school." So the question is, how many Franconian brewers brew their own Weizen and how many get it contract brewed by a specialist wheat beer producer?
