If you're not absolutely sure the train will be very quiet, always reserve a seat, so you have something to fall back on. The cost is hardly prohibitive! If the train is not crowded you can always move somewhere else. Just be sure to check the indicators above! There is one rule you must remember though: if you do not take your reserved seat, you have no right to it later on (Jimbo!) - I read somewhere you have to take your reserved seat within 15 minutes from departure. And be sure to check that you are in the right car (waggon)! For myself, I usually reserve aisle seats, because esp. in ICE's you may end up staring at the wall in so called "window"-seats. Also that gives me some extra leg space (not really that important - ever travelled in a TGV?) and more freedom (and better vision).
