The display above the seats indicate if they're reserved or not, and from which point to which point they're reserved. If you've reserved a seat, but some guy chose to sit in your seat, then he's at fault, of course, and should've been muttering about how dumb he was--especially if the car was largely empty! There are also some seats which may be set aside for passengers who reserved seats too late before departure for the specific seat to be indicated on the display. These will show as "bitte frei geben" or something like that, it means, please "please give this seat up" if someone comes along with a reservation for it. "Bahn.comfort" seats--keep out, they're MINE! ;) IME, it's hard to predict whether a given train will be crowded or not. Treinjan's right, of course--reserving a seat is always a good idea. He's also right to point out that you need to make sure you get your Wagen number right. Also of note, Die Bahn is tightening up access to 1st class cars; if the 1st class is at the front of the train, you will likely be prohibited from trying to exit out through the 1st class cars. (People like to do this to save time changing between trains.) I personally prefer the open Wagen, and an aisle and window together for my Frau and me, but stupidly, you can't specify an aisle and window together when you buy two tickets online, rather, only two windows or two aisles.
