Fastenbier zur Fastenzeit!

Did indeed make it to Schlenkerla for Fastenbier yesterday, Ash Wednesday. Was very, very good. Richer than I recall last year's being. My *plan* was to go there, have blaue Zipfel or something similarly light for lunch, and have 1 or 2 Seidla. Ha! The Altes Lokal is so gemütlich, the people so chatty and friendly, and the Fastenbier so good, that 2 Seilda managed to become 8. A Bamberger Zwiebel provided excellent ballast: http://i32.tinypic.com/2vamr08.jpg I am not ashamed to admit to having a tiny bit of wooziness today. Everyone knows the place, and of course this photo doesn't do it justice, but during a slow period, I played "tourist" to try and capture the ambiance with the two wood kegs (the smaller is of course the Fastenbier): http://i25.tinypic.com/bdllj.jpg and one of my Seidla being gezapft: http://i30.tinypic.com/2motpbp.jpg I hadn't realized that the Fastenbier has only been brewed for 3 or so years. A nice bonus of the Rauchverbot: You can actually smell the nice old wood in the Bamberger Zimmer. What a classic place. FWIW, the last paragraph from http://www.schlenkerla.de/rauchbier/sorten/fastenbier.html is printed on the backside of the otherwise standard beer coasters.
