Fränkisch

Franken is a big place, and the regional dialects are apparently legion. So...variations in spelling of Franconian versions of words probably reflect different pronunciations. I think I almost always see it spelled "Schäufela", and assumed the extra "r" was a simple typo. But I realize I'm just too sheltered in my little corner of northern Mittelfranken & southern Oberfranken! I should get out more and experience more dialectic variation. Allerdings ist das 'la' die fränkische Version des Diminutivs 'lein' im Deutschen. Wie bei den anderen Diminutiven gibt es keinen Plural. And the Babelfish translation: "However 'la' the Frankish version of the Diminutivs is 'flax' in German. As is the case for the other Diminutiven there are no Plural." ('However' should be 'indeed'.) Although I have seen "Fräuleins" as the Fräulein's plural...
