Need ideas for a Dec 07 Germany trip

Since I have been to Bamberg in December and February, I'd rather go back there during a different season. Plus, I'm flying into Frankfurt so logistics are an issue, especially since my plans include beer trading at the Kerstbierfest in Essen and that means a big suitcase full of beer. Hopping on trains with a 50 pound suitcase seems to get harder the closer I get to 50!! Basically, I'm torn between a relatively new area (Heidelberg, Speyer, possibly Freiburg) and Franconia and better beer! Zoigland has some appeal, although do I want to spend 3 hours on a train just to have a few halb liters...hmmmm Decisions...decisions... I haven't visited far northern Germany, like Hamburg. But I think I'd rather do that in warmer weather, unless someone can convince me there are spectacular winter beers available. thanks Mike
