Not your lucky day. In this case changing at Würzburg would definitely have made sense. (Via Nuremberg is in fact a detour, but can be preferable as Würzburg has sometimes short connections and is not the best place to change trains: no elevators for a start). But do not think the Swiss train system is perfect. They can break down as well, and sometimes spectacularly so!
