By "safe", do you mean are the trains mechanically safe, or are you likely to get robbed on the train? Biggest danger on Eurotrains, IMO, are drunken youth singing football songs too loudly. The Thomas Cook map might be hard to find--it has been for me in the past. I bought one version in about 1999, and then managed to find a new one in Portland (OR) last year. Worthwhile though! And I don't think you can compare urban areas like Chicago with the likes of Prague: Chicago is far, far more dangerous!
