Umlaut

Simply type the 'ä' key, which is to the right of the 'ö' key, which is to the right of the 'l'. ;) Oh, you mean on a *real* keyboard... With Windows at least, umlauted characters can be found in the 'character map', to which one can keep a shortcut on one's desktop, etc. There are also 'alt-something' shortcuts to the umlauted characters (and others, of course), but I've forgotten them. Herr Schoolmann is of course spot-on in explaining the use of '-la' as a diminuitive, the Franconian form of '-lein' or '-chen'; I would only add that a partially acceptable Enlgish translation of this could be '-lett' or '-ling'. As in, Fleischküchla == "meat cakelett". (More accurately, "meat loaflett", but the "cakelett" literal translation sounds more cute.) (What am I doing sitting here writing this when I could be on my way to the Keller in Stiebarlimbach for a Fleischküchla and a Seidla?!?)
