Biking

I was thinking of suggesting bicycling, but with a 2-1/2 year old...it's also an uphill route by bike. And not terribly short--25 km each way by my very rough estimate. If Andy & family aren't used to biking, I wouldn't personally recommend trying this one. There would theoretically be a bike surchage between Eggolsheim and Ebermannstadt, probably €3 per bike (IIRC). Then again, I bet most conductors would be understanding if a family of vacationing foreigners didn't realize that part of the journey was subject to a bike surchage and just waive it. A Tageskarte Plus bought in Forchheim would cover this though.
