| So how did I get to Le Baladin in the end? Train from Nice to Tende, then to Cunéo, then to Mondovì. Checked in at the Hotel Europa (46 euro for a good single room with breakfast), then went to Piozzo by taxi (29 euro one way). There are occasional buses from Mondovì to Piozzo but the timings do not match Le Baladin's opening hours. With some luck, you could find a bus to Carrù, meaning a shorter cab ride. Returning to Mondovì in the evening is a different matter. There are no taxis and no accommodation in Piozzo and Le Baladin closes at 2 a.m. So unless you make an arrangement with the taxi driver to come back and pick you up you will have to hitch a ride with someone who hasn't had too much to drink. I was lucky, a staff member got off at midnight and agreed to take me back to Mondovì. Farigliano might seem to be an alternative - walking there is definitely possible - but Farigliano also seems devoid of accommodations. The beers? Excellent - I tried nine, all worth the effort in getting there. |
