| This just in...it looks like June 30 will be the last day of smokey, stinky misery in most brewery Gaststätten. In July, the government will implement a smoking ban in all indoor public places except beer tents and bars and "Kneipen" where "food" isn't served. These latter two exceptions are a compromise by those cowardly members of the government's task force who can't or won't stand up to the tobacco lobby, I guess. Otherwise, the ban would be total, such as what is succeeding brilliantly in more progressive, modern countries like Italy, Ireland (!), and parts of the US. Seperate smoking rooms in restaurants can be set up, but these can not be the "main" rooms in such establishments. The logic escapes me though, if the ban is supposed to protect employees from the noxiousness, and not just non-smoking customers. Ah, right, it's the logic of cowardice. Gott sei Dank, hallelujah, etc., for what we *are* getting though! I'm practically beside myself in happy disbelief. [Sorry if this gets posted twice.] |
