REAL Monastery Breweries in Germany

Sorry to respond so late, but have been away from the internet for a while. I was also interested in this topic after visiting the Klosterbräuerei Mallersdorf (Klosterberg 1, 83044 Mallersdorf)in May. The brewing is still done by an order of Nuns there, and I enjoyed the beers at their "Klosterbräustüberl" very much. According to James D. Robertson's "A Beer Drinker's Guide to Southern Germany" 1993 edition, there were only 3 "real" klosterbräuereien (at that time)that still have Monks or Nuns involved in the brewing process. One is the above mentioned brewery in Mallersdorf. Here are the other two: Klosterbräuerei Furth (Klosterstr. 2, 84095 Furth). Per "Bierführer Niederbayern" by Schieder/Forster, they do not have a brauereigaststätte, but you can buy beer direct from the brewery (M-F 7-11, 13-16). You can probably find a restaurant or bräustüberl nearby to sample their beers. Klosterbräuhaus Ursberg (Dominikus-Ringeisten-Str. 2, 86513 Ursberg) Southwest of Augsburg, this brewery has a website: klosterbraeuhaus.de which indicates they do have a place on location to enjoy their beers (as well as a hotel to "sleep it off!". Robertson goes on to mention some of the klosterbräueien that still make their beers according to the old recipes, but the Monks or Nuns are no longer involved in the day-to-day brewing operations. Included in this list is Weltenburg, Andechs, and Ettal. Hope that helps, Sean
