One peice of non beer related news (and take this any way you want :) ) -- the McDonalds in the center of town (on Langestrasse) has closed. There is a sign saying visit us in Hallstadt ( a suburb). For beer news: Had these (in no particular order) and on draft except where noted. Oh, and all the bocks were pale (or light amb er) except the Mahrs. Schlenerla Fastenbier -- much the same as last year -- a stronger, less smokey beer than the Maerzen. Good, but one or two was enough. Slightly ligher in color than the Maerzen. Keesemann Josephi Bock. Very nice, malty but not too sweet. Their bock was my favorite of last years fall bocks and this one upholds the standard. Mahrs Der Weisse Bock (bottle). Very, very good. A bit sweeter this year and I think a bit stronger (wouldn't surprise me if close to 8%) Dark brown in color. Klosterbraeu Bock Hell. I have noticed an occasionaly "soapy" note to Klosterbraeu beers the past few years. This had a very small trace of it -- I finished the beer, but just barely. Huppendorfer Josefi Bock. Very good, but on the sweet side. One was easy to finish, but I think two would be the limit. But well made. Had this at Cafe Abseits Other beer news: A beverage trade publication had a (blind) ad, advertising an indpendent Bamberg brewery for sale. I didn't see the ad, but those who did figure it must be Klosterbraeu Schlenkerla is negotiating to open an outdoor drinking venue in the Dominikanerhof that is behind their current place. They own half the courtyard but the other half is government owned. It has been open for Sandkerwa but they (Schlenkerla) want to use it all summer. |
