Most of the German Pilseners are really monotonous, they lack the complexity of a true Bohemian Pils. The bohemian Pilseners in general have a fuller, more (sweet-)malty body, which is often nicely balanced by a aromatic, hoppy finish. Many german brewers use often not only hop-pellets, but also the cheaper hop-extracts, which cause a simple, monotonous grassy bitterness.............Cost-cutting is so important! The Keesmann is a real good Pils with some "bohemian" qualities. Another fine example - unfortunately not from Franconia, but from Munich- is the "Pilsissimus" from the Forschungsbrauerei in München-Perlach. Always worth a detour! |
