Erlangen or Forcheim??

I'd skip Erlangen and go for Forchheim. Erlangen has one large brewery (Kitzmann - not exactly very exciting) and a brewpub, IIRC only open late afternoon/evening. Erlangen is very much a sort of suburb of/commuters residence for Nuremberg. Most pubs serve "a" (=the) local beer, i.e. Kitzmann. You'd probably be far better off in FO, indeed four breweries (not that long ago still five, but Brauhaus Forchheim was taken over by Kitzmann and closed down without further notice - on the site is now a parking garage). Plus more choice at the Kellerwald.
