Wheat Beer as a Gastronomical Statement

The brewer at the local outlet of a German-style brewpub chain spoke at our homebrew club last month. He complained that when he runs out of lager and has to switch to hefeweizen or pale ale that his, erm, digestion processes cause some trouble, which does not please his wife. It happens to me a bit also (in the reverse situation). I wonder if the political statement is merely a way to make the problem of digestion sound more important/dignified? Yes, I'm sure the regional rivalries run deeper but did it all begin with yeast (even before Pasteur)?
