OT: Real Ale Days - In de Wildeman

Much less chance of encountering erstwhile posters of this board in their adoptive local over there though!

There is a fantastic corner local in Utrecht going back to the 17th century (The Three Thirsty Stags/Deer / De Drie Dorstige Herten) specialising in good beer (photo of the draught local saison), now run by a couple, the husband of which was the original barman at 't Arendsnest in Amsterdam. They want to serve real ale, but no one wants to brew it.

(!)

And they say there's another great bier café, Jan Primus, which we didn't get to last week, who USED TO serve real ale, and wants to again, but they can't get their hands on any.

(!!!!)

And a local there spends his holidays every September in ......wait for it...... Waischenfeld. He says he will try to make it out of there to look into the Hallerndorf area next year. Or not.

Utrecht is a very, very lovely city, with much better beer than certain other locations on the continent which won't be mentioned in this post, but is in dire need of proper real ale. Gassy keg beer just wouldn't cut it for the long haul, nor funny little botttles of way-too-strong exotic stuff  á 3 - 5 €. Fabulous, fabulous cafés though.

The 't Arendsnest guy says opening a brewery or brewpub in the city centre would be monumentally difficult, since the city wants to push "production" business into the sticks. Which is why the breweries that have opened in recent years are all out in McBurbia. And we noted that there we saw *no* shops that were boarded up and abandoned, though a couple being renovated. The town really seems to be pretty healthy.

Those bloody Dutch stairs though, and their bread isn't quite up to snuff....
