OT: learning German

I don't think that any of the 'teach yourself' systems can cope with the dielectal differences of Oberpfalz and Franken.  Add to that, my holidays usually include a short stay in Swabia (Leipheim)!  I suppose that it's like learning RP English and then going to Bristol, Newcastle and Glasgow. Still, in spite of Nick's reservations about the capacity of us old-uns to learn anything new, and the inadequacies of self-learning (I used to design distance learning courses!), I think that I'll give Babbel a go in the New Year - if nothing else, it will increase my very limited vocabulary.  Also, I find that people modify their dielects a bit when they are speaking to a foreigner - doesn't help with the stamtisch, of course, but we are usually able to muddle through with a bit of humour and a lot of beer.
