Yes, that was another reason not to list this one as an Alt: too pale.

I reckon they use Altbier yeast to make Altbier! Actually, I would like to use Altbierhefe in homebrewing, but it's only available in the more expensive, labour-intensive liquid form, and I just can't be arsed. And the bits about yeast remaining in suspension put me off it, even though the bits about fast maturation draw me towards it.

"German ale yeast". Reminds me of a post I saw somewhere on the internet recently about how the Bavarianisation of the North in the 19th century all but wiped out the previously existing obergärig beer culture.

You could pay a visit next week with a gaggle of Mancunian CAMRA types descending upon Düsseldorf Thu - Sun, led by erstwhile poster Peter A. (I'd be going if it weren't for the group of 35 Nebraskans heading this way at the same time, who are great fun on their coach tour, this year of Straßgiech, Uetzinger Metzgerbräu and Staffelberg.) Or, conceivably, today, with Fred and his group o' Yank Stickegeeks.

I've not been to the Rheinland in years myself.
