Unfortunatley I won't be trying it. Just curious, you mention hot rocks adding some 'smoke' flavours to the beer... I'd be interested to know just how smoky it would be, very subtle I imagine. Obviously we aren't talking Rauchbier smoky as the stones are heated over a big log fire but wouldn't take on much smoke flavour I would guess it has minimal impact on the final taste. The colour you mention comes from the sugars that fuse to the rocks when they are placed into the boil which are then transfused into the beer when the rocks are placed into the fermentation vessel later - hence the sweetness and toffee / caramel flavours and colour that should be evident in a steinbeer. I doubt these beers were traditionally highly hopped but this sounds like a modern twist which makes it less sweet than the original version you mention. Sounds interesting, but I hope the hops aren't too evident as this style of beer is subtle and warming, not meant to be hoppy (modern tastes aren't always progressive).

I've had a few modern examples such as Port Brewing Hot Rocks and one recently from Gusswerk in Austria. I also had Altenmunster Steinbeer years ago, but I'm not old enough to have tried the last regular brewer of stein beer which I beleive was Rauchenfels Brewery in Coburg. I don't remember these having much smoke flavour at all. Let us know what it's like.
