Is Mahr's really your favourite? Thought you found Roppelt to be the best!

You could have your palate corrected and come around to admit how great Griess and Witzgall are, on a par with Roppelt, for starters.

It is a bit strange to me that you find Roppelt's so good, which, in comparison to Mahr's, is so rich in flavour and aroma, and then at the same time, the bland Mahr's even better. Must be the cumulative effect of years of Robinson's on your taste buds!

BTW, Roppelt's is one that I would say shows signs of yeastiness. That and Griess. Spezial, at least what we enjoyed on Monday, definitely not. Had a bottle of Griess with tea yesterday, and it was delightfully clean. Better than the bottle we had on Saturday, FWIW.

Regarding Robinson's, which to those who may not know and yet might be mildly interested, is a large(?), traditional, old family brewery in northern England, whose beer is characterised by a distinctive house yeast. Very "English", Yank homebrewers would say. Ringwood, from way down south, is be a brewery that Yank homebrewers would likely know of, whose beer also displays strong house "yeast character", often described as "sweaty socks".

In Oregon, I used to get the occasional bottle of ale brewed with "Ringwood" yeast from breweries in the NE US. They were nasty: nothing *but* dirty socks and mushrooms. I first encountered real, English Ringwood cask beers in Manchester (I think), and was delighted to find them really not that "Ringwoody" at all. Maybe a bit more diacytel or other yeasty character than other ales, but actually quite lovely, in that traditional English way. You've had some experience with Ringwood down south, haven't you?

(And note that I have not disparaged J's favourite Robbies, which I respect and admire, even if I don't love it!)
