Weyermann

The best place to try some of the beers brewed by Weyermann on their pilot system is Cafe Abseits. As a fan of their malt, it is certainly worth the 20min walk from downtown Bamberg and down the train tracks to at least walk around their facility. Weyermann does have a nice little gift shop that is open most days (for limited hours). I was fortunate enough to get a nice, two-hour tour of their facility this past July. I was with a group of beer educators and beer judges -- I don't think they typically do tours. We got to climb around many of the buildings, go into the room where they malt the barley, see the giant roasting kilns, and then meet their current pilot system brewer (from Australia) and sample an IPA, a rauchbier, and a couple of others. Of interest to me was that over half of their malt is exported outside of Germany (US, China, etc) and that their base malt lines appears to be a very small part of their overall specialty malt business.
