Nass und Kalt ist gut für Spalt (Hopfen in the News)

After the very long, drawn-out end of winter having delayed spring weather by a month this year, there was an article in the paper about how the hop harvest would probably not suffer this year. Apparently a very cold spring or delayed spring can be good. But then there was excessive rain in June, and then a dry heat wave in July, which apparently screwed things up for the Hallertau production. Not necessarily so for Franconian Spalt, however, as this article points out: < http://www.nordbayern.de/region/roth/primus-in-deutschland-1.3119997 > The Spalter harvest is expected to exceed last year's, though last year's was down on the year before. 23% down in the Hallertau / Hollerdau, lovely photo: < http://www.nordbayern.de/region/hopfenernte-wird-geringer-ausfallen-als-im-vorjahr-1.3117012 > This one talks about hop production in general, but also quite a bit of detail about Franconian Hersbruck, the smallest hop production region in the country. < http://www.nordbayern.de/region/pegnitz/mit-perle-oder-opal-schmeckt-bier-noch-besser-1.3109521 > German production is just under 17000 hectares, broken down into: 129 ha in Hersbruck (with an expansion of 5.5 this year!) 350 ha in Spalt 1200 ha in Elbe/Saale 1200 ha in Tettnang 14000 ha in the Hallertau For comparison, 5500 ha are grown in Czechia and 13000 in the US. Doesn't say how much of the lovely Polaris has been grown, nor where, nor where I can get some!
