OT: Visit to Manchester 3

Turn off now if you're getting bored - I won't mind! Friday brought a visit to Chester to see my sister-in-law. Managed to fit in a pint at the Pied Bull - lovely fifteenth century pub, with its own micro-brewery. Had a pint (!) of Pied Eyed, which was superb - as good as anything tried so far. Jumped off train coming back at Manchester Oxford Road and headed for Peveril of the Peak. Strangely, this was a pub that I rarely, if ever, visited in my youth. Think it had an iffy reputation but can't remember why. Maybe it the Wilson's beers, which you could drink anywhere in Manchester and weren't that great. Still, it is nice to see that they have retained all the Wilson's signs - even the chequer-board tiles in the Gent's - really made me feel at home. Pity the Everard's Tiger was so mundane and the jukebox so loud - really ruined what is a great preservation. On to the BP, as the Briton's Protection was always known. A former regular (though not so much as the late lamented Tommy Duck's which used to be a couple of hundred yards away before Greenall Whitley's demolished it after trading one Saturday night/Sunday morning) and still looking good. In the spirit of low gravity beers, tried Cottager's Southern bitter - pleasant but certainly not in the class of Marble's Pint. Finally (good you say), a half in The Grey Horse. As pleasant and friendly as ever and a really nostalgic yeasty taste to the Hyde's bitter - this is what I would describe as an old-fashioned typical Manchester bitter. Stil left to do: a couple of my old locals: probably Andy Black's in Ringway for some Robbie's and the Griffin in Heald Green for my first Holt's. One sour note: you can spend a lot of money drinking in Manchester - the cheapest pint seems to be £3 or about €3.45. Ok, not US or Munich prices but Manchester used to be always considered a low-priced place. Good gracious, what must you be paying in London!
