Fake Zoiglbier

First, yes please Don - to my email address. Nick, of course, you're right but life's a bit short and I don't think that migration is on the cards - at least not at the moment. Apart from persuading SWMBO that it might be a good idea, there's the little problem of selling a house that can't be sold (like all the rest in rural Ireland) and even deciding that I would like to leave here! Re Gerhard's comments: I'm sure that you realise that the community of the real zoigl consists only of very small part-time businesses spread over quite a distance (say from Mitterteich to Eslarn is a fair way). They are not really that well organised and coordinated (even Eschawo and Neuhaus brewers are fairly disconnected). As for the geographical protection option, I think you make the point yourself that it would only protect 'echte zoigl' from brewers outside the Oberpfalz. I don't actually think that they are a problem, it is the commercial breweries in the Oberpfalz who obscure the true meaning of zoigl, including, as Don says, Wuerth in Eschawo and also Wolfram, who masquerade as echte zoigl brewers but are not - and produce lousy beer! It wouldn't stop Bischofshof in Regensburg or Schlossbrauerei in Reuth, both of whom turn out substantial quantities of ersatz zoigl for supermarkets. I think that the only answer is to keep supporting the echte zoigl brewers in the same way that we support all small local breweries, whether they be in Oberpfalz, Franken or any other part of the world!
