Probably written enough about our recent visit to Eschawo to last Franken beer enthusiasts a lifetime, so a few lines about our holiday finale. After a pleasant but rather subdued last evening in Beim Binner (and a quick seidla on Saturday morning!), we made our way to Ebensfeld. Nice but small fewo near the bahnhof. On the way back from Rewe, we called in at Gasthof Neuner, where we sat in the early evening sunshine and had a rather undistinguished helles (from Weissmain, I think). Then headed off for the Engelhardt Keller. A pleasant place, much like many other Franken keller, the only bier vom fass was 'kellerliebe'. Typical keller beer, not too malty, not too hoppy, nice but a bit bland. I bought a bottle of Adam Riese and sampled in our fewo - a very dry and malty dunkles that I could get to like. Ebensfeld suffers from the closure of Zum Schwan, as there doesn't seem anywhere locally where it is possible to sample their full range of beers. Any ideas? Final evening was spent in Memmingen, a place that I instinctively dislike because it means the end of our hols! Had a seidla of Memmingen helles, which was filtered and fizzy and then wandered up to the local Barfuser. This is a 'mega-brew pub', with a small brewery in the front window. Very crowded, very noisy, very automated, the exact antithesis of everything that I like in a pub. Anyway, we tried the blond and the schwarz, neither of which was exactly bad but neither of which set the pulses racing. Oh, and twice the price of a seidla in Eschawo (or Ebing). Conclusions: we might find it difficult to go back to Eschawo but probably a year will heal the wounds, especially as so many people were so nice to us and begged us to return. We'll see. The visit to Sesslach was an eye opener and I would definitely like to return, if we can solve the transport problem. I'd also like to get to sample Scharp in Heiligedorf, plus all the other breweries in the locality that were shut on our day trip. It's likely that J. will have to have another hip operation (she's at our GP as I write), so immediate plans are a bit unclear, but we were planning a trip back to our native soil to seem my sister-in-law in Chester in August. If we get there, hopefully, we will get to sample a few products from the new wave British breweries.
