OT: another meaning of IPA

Whoah -- makes me eyes bleed! OTOneH, it suggests that NA English is quite a bit more complicated than one might think. OTOtherH, it's not detailed enough: the difference between Minneapolis MN and Eau Claire WI within the "Western North" dialect area is huge, as I can personally attest to, having grown up in the former (at least, from age 9 to age 26) and having moved to the latter. And to lump those two areas in with the region to the west, the Dakotas, is laughable. But I also like what Her Majesty the Queen has posted on Twitter: "Remember, my dear Americans, there is no such thing as 'American English'. There is English, and then there are mistakes." Or something like that. Ironically, Mark & I were just discussing the merits of his native Massachusetts accent over Kellerbier yesterday.
