I'm not sure that you can really deduce anything from individual accents, even family accents, because pronunciations are often affected by personal quirks. When I was studying English in U. of Leeds, we were taught that there were three essential divisions of US accents: New England, Southern and General, i.e. everywhere else, which seems to beg a big question.
