Comparing Bland Beer

Nick in a previous post you said: "AFAIK, the stuff in the barrel "auf dem Keller" outside is Edelstoff, and the Hell is only served inside with CO2. The latter is drinkable, even quite decent, whereas the former..." Just for clarification, I was there in March and was inside in the Schwemme (do they call it that in Munich? - it was the entrance room where they pour the beer at any rate). I ordered a Helles and without blinking the waitress went and retrieved a beer poured from the barrel. Was it the Edelstoff or the Hell? I really don't know. I know it tasted a lot better than the Edelstoff I had had in the bottle here in the states previously. Reading Jason's post I'm also reminded of the trip I took to Italy with my wife a couple of years ago. We were in Bologna which is a great wine and food city but I had trouble finding any beer other than Peroni until we happened upon a small student hangout/bar and when I peeked inside and I saw Augustiner on tap. Jackpot!! Not having had good beer in a few days up to that point Augustiner tasted mighty good indeed. That turned out to be a great night hanging out with friendly locals and enjoying Augustiner beer.
