Comparing Bland Beer

D'oh! That's pretty horrid. I started doing some comparisons of beers "Export" with the Edelstoff, as well as the standard Münchener Hell(s) with the Augie Hell last weekend. It was pretty dire, uninspiring...nay...depressing work. Of the several "Exports" compared, only one was lamer/worse than the Edelstoff. And that was ...wait for it... Oettinger. Two Franconians were the most promising, with some suggestions of malt and hop notes: Steigerwald (Br. Kesselring) and Gampert Bräu Förster Gold. The former had quite a bit of hop aroma and flavour, though suspiciously extract-y in nature. The latter was just decent all around, even if it's not labeled as "Export", it certainly fits the model: 5.5% and golden. Has "Export" beer always been so lame? Never been to Dortmund, especially not when the breweries there were still operating. The Auggie Hell was especially disappointing: even the Paulaner had more character! I did get a bit of corn or DMS in it, I think. I didn't take notes, and honestly, I'd like to forget I spent the 70 cents on the bottle! I'd last had it a couple of years ago in München vom Fass. I've not done any "serious" tasting making real notes in many years now, especially in a setting like a competition where I'm surrounded by more experienced (non-professional) judges. And back then, I certainly didn't judge bland lager. It's not easy, comparing such bland examples!
