I'm sure you're right about the 'non-native' speaker issue. You are partly correct that the Americans inherited the Middle endian system of dates (m-d-y) from the British but the British (and Western world) also used the Gregorian Little endian system (d-m-y). The latter was almost certainly more common due to the use of it in legal documents. It came from the religious habit of writing "The 21st day of March in the year of our Lord 2013". You learn something new every day, and if we were all the same we'd be boring. Raise a glass to diversity.
