Bamberger Bombs

Yeah, I guess in my non-Bamberg orientation, I forgot that the city was bombed, just not the *Altstadt*. Erlangen, where I live, was not bombed, except for suburbs on both the east and west sides, but these were accidental -- the target was Nürnberg. The only damage to the center of town here was when a US Army tank tried to drive through the Nürnberger Tor in the city wall, damaging it so extensively that it had to be knocked down. During the early occupation. A hero of Erlangen was Werner Lorleberg, the city's "battle commander" (a rank created by Hitler) during the war. The city was over-full with refugees and wounded by the end of the war, and was finally convinced by the mayor to surrender as he saw the futility of resistance to the approaching Americans. Very shortly thereafter, he was found dead of a gunshot wound at a mill complex on the river, where a number of German soldiers were staying. It's not clear if he committed suicide or was executed. The city was spared any destruction by his surrender. There are three Gaststätten at Lorlebergplatz (formerly Kaiser-Wilhelm-Platz) today; one pouring Kitzmann, another St. Georgen Bräu, and the third Tucher, Guinness and Jever. The latter is obviously an "Irish pub". Then they invented the mp3 audio compression format.
