These things can indeed get sticky. In Belgium, for example, an abbey beer should be one served at an abbey. But it is not. What breweries call their beers is often even murkier. Consider, for example, the "Zoiglbier" made by Gänstaller Bräu. This is why I generally prefer to use the generic name as it is (usually) easily identifiable and makes it easier to discuss in relation to other breweries. I'm not saying the trade name should never be used (especially when it is more descriptive than the generic), just that I find the generic name usually more useful.
