Endorse the comment re Roadside Tavern but Doolin is a bit of a no-no for me for a number of reasons. Mainly, it's because it has become the 'touristy' face of Irish music, a subject on which I could write a book (actually, I've just nearly finished one!). I'm not really mad on the concept of the new Irish breweries because of the general practice of kegging beer. This was what was so nice about Kavanagh's in Dublin - 4 handpumps, good variety and well kept - helps that the landlord is a home brewer. Other than that, it's just lethargy! Unlike in the States, where I'm sure that driving 30 or so miles is like crossing the street, my philosophy is to avoid getting behind the wheel as much as possible - this from a man who has owned upwards of 120 cars in his life! But, times change. One of the reasons that I like going to Germany is the cheap and really accessible public transport. If I lived in that country, I wouldn't bother to own a car. Don't know whether you know but, as a senior citizen, I have a travel pass, which means that I can use all public transport free of charge. The joke (Irish) is that there is virtually none available. The nearest public bus is more than 5 miles away (3 times a day, Kilrush to Ennis) and the nearest train is 25 miles in Ennis.
