Bamberg Days 5-6

Day 5 was Tuesday. I met Gerhard and we took a Bier Tour north of Bamberg by car. First we stopped at the new brewery MAIN Seidla, but alas they were closed. Next we drove to Lichtenfels and visited a tiny brewery in a man's house: Brauerei Lipperts. He brews 100 L batches in a shed in his yard, and does the fermentation in his basement. Interesting visit! Next it was Brauerei Trunk at Vierzehnheiligen. It was quiet at the monastery that day, so we had a nice lunch there: Rotwurst und Leberwurst mit Sauerkraut und Brot. Tasty, small Schlachtschuessel. I tried all 4 of the beers on tap: Nothelfer Pils, Festbier, Helles Bockbier, and Export Dunkel. All good, but I think the Dunkel is the best, but the Bock was also very nice, and not overly sweet. After lunch we drove over (well, around) the hill to Uetzing to visit Uetzinger Metzgerbraeu. Wow, very interesting and cool place! A full time butchery with a shop, but also a brewer. We got a tour of the brewery and the smoke room where the hams and sausages are smoked, and we stood in the tiny shop and drank beer with locals. Crazy, but perfect. The regular beer (Kellerbier? Landbier) was quite nice, and the Bock was very good as well. I did not want to leave, but I did buy some vacuum-packed Zwetschgenbames to take away. We also noticed that the pub across the road from the Metzgerei/Brauerei was having a Schlachtschuessel, but we did not stop in. Instead we drove to the nearby village of Stublang, where we visited Brauerei Dinkel. This was a comfortable place, and they were also having a Schlachtschuessel! Amazing, I always try to find them, but this time 3 just appeared in front of us. The beer at Dinkel was and unfiltered Dunkel, and it was good. We ate dinner and had one beer, and wanted another beer, but the service was too slow, so we left. On the way back to Bamberg, we tried to visit Brauerei Fischer in Rattelsdorf, but they had already closed for the night at 8:30 pm. Too bad. We then proceeded to Brauerei Gasthof Hotel Drei Kronen in Memmelsdorf for a beer and some Bier Eis. Overall a great day! Thanks again, Vielen Dank, to Gerhard for being the designated driver! :-) Day 6, Wednesday Dec. 5 I met Fred and 2 Sticke Warriors and Matt Jessop at Spezial for lunch. Nice to see everyone again. After lunch we went our separate ways, and I went to the Bahnhof to catch an RE to Nuremberg, where I visited the Christkindlmarkt after a short walk in the falling snow from the train station. The Nuremberg Christmas Market is certainly the largest of the 4 or so I have seen, but I found the variety of food and drink offered to be lacking compared to Frankfurt's Market. Still, I ate some roasted chestnuts and drank some blueberry Gluehwein and tasted a Nuremberger Bratwurst, so I had fun. After the Markt, I walked up the steep hill to see the former location of Huett'n, which is now restaurant Alm. I then took the side street to the new Huett'n. This place was really busy, but I found a seat at the bar. I had their two "House" beers. The first was a Zwickelbier (Helles) brewed by Brauerei Nickl for Huett'n. It was quite nice! Next was the Hausbraeu Bernstein Bier, an unfiltered amber lager. This beer was not brewed by Nickl, but the barman did not say who brews it. It was passable, but not nearly as good as the Zwickel. After an hour or more, I bid Huett'n farewell, and walked back the Bahnhof. I hopped on a train heading north, and exited at Erlangen where I met the elusive Nick B. He took me on a Kneipen Tour in the area around the Bahnhof. We stopped at S-Bar (Krugbraeu Dunkel vom Fass), Cafe Manhattan Kino (Brauerei Alt Dietzhof Helles Lager vom Fass), then a bar of unknown name where we encountered a very friendly and talkative (and drunk) local woman (Meisterbraeu vom Fass), and finally a stop at Cafe im Hinter for our nightcap (Lindenbraeu Dunkel). It was then a walk back to the Bahnhof to catch the last train of the night back to Bamberg. Quite a late night, but interesting and fun! Thanks for the Erlangen Tour, Nick. :-) Cheers!
