"Will it be OK to travel by bus that time of year?" If you mean, if the buses run over the holidays, you can find this out using the trip planner at vgn.de and bahn.de, among others. It depends on where you want to go. The mass transit organisation called VGN covers the region shown at http://www.vgn.de/verbundgebiet/ but their English website is extremely limited. Traveling within the VGN requires you to use their ticketing system in most cases, or a BayernTicket from the national system, Die Bahn. If you're only visiting Nürnberg for the Weihnachtsmarkt, I'd suggest doing it as a day trip from Bamberg, as the express train connection's pretty fast and affordable for two people using the VGN TagesTicketPlus. (Or if you're alone, using a Streifenkarte...strip card ticket is usually the cheapest way.) Renting a car...again, it depends on what you want to do and where you want to go. I don't know if I see the point if you're (very sensibly) not going to be drinking and driving. Plus, it's winter, so there can be snow and ice. Bamberg is quite well located for visiting many lovely little towns by train and bus. Getting to Rothenburg o.d. Tauber from there isn't so easy though: Nearly 2-1/2 hours with 2 or 3 changes each way. You could split your stay between Rothenburg and Bamberg very nicely. Are you flying in, and if so, to which airport?
