On the contrary, European fares were horrific. In the early 1990s, pre-Ryanair, I used to pay £240 for a return flight from Bristol to Dublin using Aer Lingus, the Irish 'people's airline'. To be fair, European were prohibitive to all but the rich and business travellers. This was largely because all the major airlines were part of a cartel called IATA. If you want, I can tell you similar stories about freight traffic, which was my business for many years.
