The only airport that I can recall where a bus is used is Manchester. Due to its size, the aircraft usually parks miles away from the entrance to the terminal. Otherwise, you have to walk. Sometimes, this is quite interesting as you thread your way between aircraft and various bits of airport equipment trying to find the terminal entrance. Sometimes, the cabin crew act as guides but, more often than not, you simply find your own way. I have read that this is due to Ryanair refusing to pay for buses and use of gangways. Reminds me of a similar situation at the old Otopeni Airiport in Bucharest. My first visit was at night in 1991 and there were virtually no lights to guide us - a most interesting introduction!
