Forchheim Update 4

Reindler was indeed a pleasant surprise. I wouldn't say the beers were necessarily *hoppier* than other good Franconian ones -- certainly less hoppy than the better Kellerbiers -- but they were bloody well made. The Dunkel reminded me of Rotbier, and with Herr Champion of Rotbier sitting there, I had to pick his brain on what differed between that and a real Rotbier. It had a pleasingly dry maltiness and quite light body. The Export was a bit bland and sweetish, though the Landbier had some character to it. And the Pils was simply a very good beer, a very good 'fränkisches Pils' as opposed to Bohemian or something from up north. The ride thither from Ansbach Bf was lovely, and took exactly as long as I'd expected -- the train being 5 minutes late and my having to buy a map at the station (not realizing that I didn't have maps loaded for that part of the world on my GPS!) led to me not being early. Then a herd of sheep held me up on the return ride, causing me to miss the quick connection back home, which in turn led to me discovering the most excellent Sommerbier at Schanzenbräu: a less-hopped, lagered version of what I brew at home, though stronger, at 3.6% abv. Highly, highly recommended. If Spielbach's geriatric lady and "spezial" beer appeals to you, then you owe it to yourself to get up to Aichinger in Heiligenstadt. Read up on Ron P's thoughts on the place. Just to frustrate you further...the Regional Express train runs through from Nürnberg to Forchheim despite the construction works; you didn't necessarily have to take a bus, AFAIK. Unless it was later than 21.00 or so, or whenever the last RE runs. But then you'd have to sit and wait in Nürnberg... I reckon that the 977 will wait for the RE from Forchheim if it's running late. The DB webbie says everything's running on time *right now*, and you should have a 3 minute overlap. But yes, that's a bit tight. We'll head directly to Geisfeld (well, most likely passing through Roßdorf), aiming for 15.00 at the Griess Keller. (Note the use of first person plural.) Hope the Kellerbier will be in fine form. For my sake, not just yours!
