Forchheim update 2

Why I don't care for Mahr's U is: it's very one-dimensional. There's just very little pleasing *flavour* at all in it, just a bit of grainy, husky harshness without anything to back it up -- not even maltiness, especially for a beer at Vollbier strength. A grainy, husky harshness, not a hop bitterness. It's just plain boring and I feel like I'm cheating my liver when I drink it: no gustatory pleasure to offset the alcohol. I certainly would not have prompted you to visit the Witzgall Keller yesterday! (post below as I learnt you were already underway notwithstanding) It's very shady, and you really need 22° or more (as opposed to yesterday's breezy 18°) to enjoy the setting. And you need the place to be populated with retirees and their grandchildren, which I reckon probably wasn't the case yesterday, to make the atmosphere. It used to only open on Sundays; Saturday opening is a new thing from the new lessee, who took over a couple of years ago due to the owner heading toward his sunset years. What's great about the place is how old-fashioned and small it is. Would have shown you the inches-wide cracks in the back side of the house and all if we'd been there. The complete opposite to Roppelt, et. al. Pity about the beer being gassy, maybe the barrel had just been filled or something? Don't think I've ever been on a Saturday. Will have to ask if we make it there today, based on the weather. You'll just have to hope for a warm *Sunday* next week and a return visit.
